Councils Are In For A Hard Time As The Government Slash Public Spending. Savings Are Now Top Priority In Order To Keep Jobs

Well the 2010 budget is really what we all expected, and while it is going to be harsh all round, we can’t deny, that over the piece, public spending has mushroomed during Labour’s residence in Government. So if the Councils want to keep jobs but still need to decrease spending, where are the reductions going to come from?

Well the palpable choices are salary restrictions and where feasible some councils are investigating amalgamating services including Higher management. This is good stuff, notablyfar reaching. Truthfully to see two refuse lorries with differing Council logos is mind boggling especially when less than 500 thousand inhabitants live in two small counties.

Another opportunity is to ask individual staff to Work From Home. There are several benefits to be reaped here and not merely for the Councils. Councils have numerous Online Jobs where people are in essence tied to a pc. They hardly ever communicate face to face with other people, and if they do, it is by e-mail or the rare telephone call. How many people in other departments have you never ever glimpsed but you have e-mailed or spoken to over the phone?

The savings for Councils if some staff Work From Home start to the majority of Councils have had to hire Porta Cabins to house staff through the noughties as Council budgets inflated. These leases could be terminated on expiry and people returned into the main building. Along with this are savings in maintenance bills, utility bills, reduced canteen bills (most of which subsidise meals for people as well) andgenerally less wear and tear overall.

With the lots of Online Jobs can be transferred without difficulty to an employee’s house. The employee gains money-wise through savings on the daily commute, and possibly reduced food bills etc, but they also acquire time which over a week can be as much as 10 to 20 hours influenced by how far work is from their home.

Another area is e-commerce. Councils need to wake up to Internet Business and the chances to widen the marketplace on individual tenders. How many councils go through the motions on rewarding contracts for significant parts of their council budgets? I am certain that opening the bids to a wider audience would a) lessen the costs and b) invite some firms which have more progressive ideas.

Internally, taking on an Internet Business mind set might also make an impression. By teaching employees to communicate electronically, and as a result consume less paper based materials, huge savings can be made in stationary, files, filing cabinets, space, heating lighting etc etc.

So this is a positive start for big savings – with some employees who have Online Jobs moved out to Work From Home major savings can be made for both parties.

Employing Internet Business practices to –
a) Lessen contracted services, capital equipment and consumables
b) Lessen paper based media and communications adds to the along side these proposals but if you implemented it nationwide I bet it might run into hundreds of millions of tax-payer’s hard earned ready money. So shouldn’t the councils have an responsibility to you and me to at least adopt some of the above proposals?
